Quick Answer
There is no same-day apostille in South Africa. DIRCO issues apostilles for government documents in about a week. Documents that a notary can certify can go through the High Court in two to three business days, and that is the fastest legitimate route. Anyone offering a same-day DIRCO apostille is either putting your document in the normal queue or not using DIRCO at all.
People search for a rush or same-day apostille because a deadline has arrived: a flight, a visa appointment, a job offer, a court date abroad. This page tells you what can actually be done in the time you have, so you do not pay for a promise nobody in South Africa can keep.
Why there is no same-day apostille
An apostille is a government certification, not a private service. Only two authorities in South Africa can issue one:
- DIRCO, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, for documents issued by the state: birth, marriage and death certificates, police clearance certificates, degrees and diplomas. DIRCO works through booked submissions, has no walk-in counter since September 2026, and returns documents in about a week. There is no priority queue and no fee that buys a faster one.
- The High Court, for documents certified by a notary public: powers of attorney, affidavits, contracts, company resolutions and notarised copies where the destination accepts them. The Registrar signs within two to three business days.
A company cannot sign an apostille. What a good service does is get your document to the right authority, in the right form, first time, and bring it back to you. That saves days. It does not create a same-day option.
Your real options, by deadline
| Time until you need the document | What is achievable |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 days | No apostille can be issued. Ask the receiving party whether a notarised certified copy will do for now, with the apostilled original to follow by courier. We can start the job today so it arrives as soon as possible. |
| 3 to 5 days | High Court route for anything a notary can certify. Government originals cannot be done in this window. |
| 6 to 10 days | DIRCO route for government originals you already hold. High Court route with time to spare. |
| More than 10 days | Either route. If you still need the document itself issued, add about two weeks for a Home Affairs unabridged certificate and two to four weeks for a SAPS police clearance. |
What genuinely saves time
- Have the original in hand. DIRCO apostilles original documents. The most common cause of a missed deadline is not DIRCO, it is waiting for Home Affairs or SAPS to issue the document in the first place.
- Check which version the destination wants. Many countries require the unabridged birth or marriage certificate. Ordering it takes about two weeks, so find out before you book anything.
- Use the High Court where you can. If the document can be notarised and the receiving party accepts a High Court apostille, you gain four to five days.
- Submit early in the week. A Monday submission comes back the same week. A Friday submission does not.
- Courier instead of collecting. Local courier is R250 and international courier R800 to R1,300. If you have already left, we send the apostilled document to you.
- Get an honest answer the same day. Send a photo of the document and your date on WhatsApp during business hours and you will know the route, the days and the price before close of business. That is the one same-day promise we can make.
What it costs
There is no rush surcharge, because there is no rush queue. The price is the price.
| Service | Cost (ZAR) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| DIRCO apostille | R1,650 per document | About 1 week |
| High Court apostille (notarisation included) | R1,650 per bundle per destination country | 2 to 3 business days |
| Notarisation only | R1,350 per document | Same day by appointment |
| Affidavit commissioning | R350 per document | Same day by appointment |
| Home Affairs unabridged certificate | R2,750 | About 2 weeks |
| SAPS police clearance | R2,450 | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Local courier | R250 | Overnight |
| International courier | R800 to R1,300 by zone | 3 to 7 days |
The documents that most often break a deadline
- Police clearance certificate. SAPS takes two to four weeks to issue it. Once you hold it, the DIRCO apostille takes about a week. Nothing shortens the SAPS part.
- Unabridged birth or marriage certificate. Home Affairs takes about two weeks. The abridged version on your old certificate is often not accepted abroad.
- Degree certificates. DIRCO about a week, but some destinations first want a SAQA evaluation, which takes longer. Check before you start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a same-day apostille in South Africa?
No. DIRCO, the authority for government-issued documents, issues apostilles in about a week and has no priority queue. The fastest legitimate route is the High Court, which apostilles notarised documents in two to three business days. Any offer of a same-day DIRCO apostille is either a normal queue sold at a premium or not a DIRCO apostille at all.
What is the fastest apostille route in South Africa?
The High Court route: two to three business days for documents a notary can certify, such as powers of attorney, affidavits, contracts and company resolutions. Government originals such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearances and degrees must go through DIRCO, which takes about a week.
Can I pay DIRCO or an agent for faster processing?
No. DIRCO has one queue and one process. An agent can save you the trip and the paperwork errors, but cannot move your document ahead of others. Easy Services Group charges R1,650 per DIRCO apostille with no rush surcharge, because there is no rush queue to buy.
I travel in 48 hours and need a police clearance apostilled. What are my options?
An apostille cannot be issued in 48 hours. Ask the receiving party whether a notarised certified copy will do for now and whether the apostilled original may follow by courier. We can start the DIRCO job immediately and courier the apostilled document to you abroad for R800 to R1,300 depending on the destination zone.
Is a High Court apostille accepted the same as a DIRCO apostille?
Yes. Both are issued under the Hague Apostille Convention and carry the same legal weight abroad. The difference is which authority is competent for your document: DIRCO for documents issued by the state, the High Court for documents certified by a notary.
