Quick Answer

An Umalusi verification letter is an official letter from Umalusi confirming that your South African school-leaving certificate (Matric, NSC, Senior Certificate, IEB, NCV or N3) was issued by an Umalusi-registered assessment body and is genuine. We procure it on your behalf and apostille it through DIRCO for international use. Total time: 5–9 weeks. From R1,650 (apostille) + Umalusi fee.

What is Umalusi?

Umalusi (the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training) is the statutory South African body that quality-assures school-level qualifications. It is the equivalent of an exam board / school qualifications regulator.

Umalusi accredits the assessment bodies that issue Matric and other school-leaving certificates — the Department of Basic Education (DBE) for the National Senior Certificate (NSC), the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) for the IEB Senior Certificate, and SACAI for some private candidates. It also accredits private schools, TVET colleges (for NCV and N3) and ABET providers.

What an Umalusi Verification Letter Confirms

  • Your certificate is genuine and was issued by an Umalusi-registered assessment body
  • The school or institution that prepared you was registered at the time
  • Your certificate type and the qualification it represents (NSC, SC, IEB SC, NCV L4, GETC, N3)
  • Your subject results as recorded by the issuing body
  • The certificate’s NQF level (currently NQF Level 4 for NSC and equivalents)

Who Needs an Umalusi Letter

  • Foreign university applicants — UK, USA, Canadian, Australian, German, Dutch and other universities frequently request Umalusi confirmation of your NSC before issuing an unconditional offer.
  • Work visa applicants where school-level qualifications form part of the points test — Australia 482/186 (low-NSC roles), UK Skilled Worker (entry-level), Canada Express Entry (where post-school qualification is not required for the role).
  • Skilled trades and apprenticeships abroad — UK, Germany, Netherlands trade visas often require school-leaving certificate verification before NCV / N3 trade qualifications are accepted.
  • TEFL teachers — some countries (China, Vietnam) accept NSC + TEFL. The NSC needs Umalusi verification.
  • Student visa applicants — Many destinations require Umalusi verification of NSC subject results to confirm pre-tertiary academic record.
  • Anyone with a pre-2008 Senior Certificate — older certificates often need Umalusi confirmation because they were issued under the previous Department of Education structure and modern foreign authorities may not recognise the issuing body.

The Process

1

Document Gathering

We need certified copies of your ID and your original Matric / NSC / SC / IEB / NCV / N3 certificate plus statement of results, and a signed authorisation form. We compile and submit to Umalusi on your behalf.

2

Umalusi Verification (4–8 weeks)

Umalusi cross-references your certificate against its records and the assessment body’s records (DBE, IEB, etc), then issues a verification letter under official seal.

3

DIRCO Apostille (~1 week)

The Umalusi letter is submitted to DIRCO for apostille, making it valid in all Hague Convention countries.

4

Delivery

We courier the apostilled letter to you or directly to your foreign authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Umalusi verification letter?

An official letter from Umalusi confirming your South African school-leaving certificate is genuine and was issued by an Umalusi-registered assessment body (DBE for NSC, IEB for IEB SC, etc).

Which qualifications does Umalusi cover?

NSC (current Matric, post-2008), IEB and SACAI Senior Certificates, the older Senior Certificate (pre-2008), NCV Levels 2–4, GETC ABET Level 4, and N3. Umalusi does not cover post-school qualifications (those go to DHET).

Why do I need an Umalusi letter for use abroad?

Foreign universities, immigration authorities and employers often require government confirmation that your Matric is genuine. The certificate itself was issued by a provincial Department of Education or assessment body — the Umalusi letter is the national-level government confirmation foreign authorities understand.

How long does Umalusi verification take?

4–8 weeks from Umalusi, plus ~1 week for DIRCO apostille. Total: 5–9 weeks. Older Senior Certificates (pre-2008) can take longer if cross-archive checks are required.

My school no longer exists. Can I still get verification?

Yes — Umalusi verifies the certificate, not the school. As long as the assessment body (DBE, IEB) records exist, verification is possible. We have processed many cases where the original school has closed or merged.

My certificate is from before 1996. Can Umalusi help?

Umalusi was established in 2002 and primarily certifies post-1996 qualifications. For older certificates (pre-1996 or apartheid-era certificates from former homelands), Umalusi can sometimes still issue confirmation through the historical archive, but the process is slower and outcome less certain.
